About
The Wonderful World of Rats! (and other small animals)
Rats are very misunderstood creatures. The media and hollywood tend to characterize rats as dirty and diseased. However, rats are very clean creatures and are highly intelligent. Rats will learn to come to their name and even learn to poop in a litter box! They are very social and actually will highly benefit from having a companion of the same gender. Rats who live by themselves are desperate for attention when you come near the cage, while rats kept in pairs are more interested in begging for treats. This site is here to help new time rat owners (or those who would like to further their knowledge on rat care), to either provide their new family members the prober care, or to find out if rats are the right pet for them.
Small animals in general, are wonderful! When properly socialized, small animals love spending time with you. They also don't demand as much space as a cat or dog (but you should still get an appropriate size cage. Do not go under the minimum requirement) and are content either exploring a small room, the top of a desk or bed, or running around in a playpen. You don't have to take them for walks like a dog, or pry them off your lap when you're trying to read a book (or trying to do homework) like a cat. Small animals are great 'poket' companions who have big personalities. Personalities that can only shine when you give them proper care.

Why I created this site.
I have loved animals since I was little and have had a few different types. Then I discovered the wonderful world of rats and instantely fell in love with their great personalities. My first pair of rats were Speedy and Peanut-butter and they lived to be 5.5 years old. I will admit, when I first had rats, the only thing I got right was the proper cage size, and giving fruits and veggies as treats. Another huge contributing fact for creating this site, was the the lack of knowledge I had when I began to work as a small animal specialist at a local pet store. The information the pet store gave me seemed incomplete and sometimes off, so I began to research on my own time. I came across excellent websites, and helpful forums/ communities, and realized that the information the pet store gave was very basic and sometimes misguiding (as they were more interested in selling items, rather then being conserned if that item was even appropriate for that animal). I have now taken this newly found knowledge and complied what information I consider to be the basic info a new rat owner must know when considering rats as pets, and some extra infomation to help new rat owners spoil their rattums to their hearts content. I hope to help others realize what wonderful creaures... no not creatures, but companions, rats make. To show they are intelligent, silly, and most importantely, loyal.
I also created this site to help others decide which small animal is the right companion for them or if they wish to learn more about the small animal they already have. My goal is to inform people that small animals need just as much care and attention as a dog or cat and that how much you inicially spent to buy a small animal should not determine whether it should recieve vet care our not. My goal is to help small animal owners understand their furry friend and how to give them the best life possible.
